AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!

I'm out of space in my Picasa account and can't post a photo until I

1) delete photos from my Picasa account
2) Buy more space from Picasa/Google

In addition to my blog, I have created,  maintain, or am an Admin on blogs for several volunteer organizations in which  I am involved;

The Latin American Bloggers Conference, which I will take myself off of!

also, a blog for a friend,  Maggies Bodega

all of which seem to be chewing in to my allowable 'free' space.   Dang it! Dang it!

I'm making a mushroom bourginon

Counting Tom and me there will be thirteen people here tonight. That's how many dwarves started on the journey to the Lonely Mountain with Bilbo.   I am making a mushroom bourginon because I can have it nearly complete well in advance, and only have to do a few finishing touches when it comes time to eat.

I had to go to the store to get the red wine I needed for the bourginon.  Now this really surprises me because we must have a hundred bottles of wine in the house.  But when I told Tom I needed something hearty and red for the reduction he told me I'd need to go buy something.

OK, so I went to the store and selected a bottle, a 2010 Santa Silvia Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina.  Then I grabbed a second bottle, just in case, then I thought this is ridiculous to not have something I can just open for no special reason at all, so I grabbed 2 bottles of  Concha y Toro Reserva Carmenere.

So I used one of the Santa Silvia's for the bourgignon, well I used most of it.  Gads its taking me a long time with this to go back and correct the typos with this tiny keyboard.  I'm using the netbook since the laptop died, and I'm pretty sure it's dead.  I even tried sr. Calypso's suggestion of turning it on while holding it upside down.  Now I don't know if that is a legitimate troubleshooting technique, or if he was just having his way with me, but I tried it - It didn't work!

Oh, and of course I had to try the wine, I mean really, you don't cook with a wine you don't like.   Hey this Santa Silvia is pretty darn tasty.   I got it at the Chedraui on Itzaes for 73pesos.   I need to go buy more, I like it.

It reduced down nicely, along with the other stuff needed and is now imparting all that lovliness in to the mushroom mixture.   It's sitting there, waiting, waiting for the finishing touches that will come tonight about 9pm.  actually it's keeping itself warm in the crock pot, how handy are crock pots?

And since I tried a bit of the wine, just a small amount mind you, I'm sure it was a small amount, wasn't it?   I decided that since I had gone to bed last night about midnight, and got up about 5am, and that we'd have friends here tonight maybe I should lay down and nap for a bit.  And wine, well actually any alcohol is good for sleeping, I mean it is a depressant isn't it.  Although sometimes it gets you all wound up and that seems counter  to  the medical claims that it is a depressant.  So I go get in my hammock thinking I will no sooner get my head down than I will be out.  I'm lying there, swaying ever so gently,  Then I thought maybe I should tell Tom to wake me up, then I thought about the wine, I really like this wine, when did I start drinking wine, gosh I like wine, I sure drink alot more beer here, here meaning in Mexico.   Back in the US I rarely ever drank beer, well except when I was a kid, It's funny isn't it, about being a kid and drinking.  I can remember being a kid, and I had a fake id and went in to a 7/11 and bought Generic Beer, I mean really, Generic Beer.  But I can also remember drinking Southern Comfort, now that is some nasty stuff.  I can't remember why we had it so often, was it from someones family stock, was it super cheap?????

Then I started thinking about other ugly stuff that happened to me as a kid,  stuff I never talk about.  Why don't I talk about it???

Then I started thinking about blogging,  and I thought oh, I know one reason I like to blog, you guys listen, you don't interrupt, If you have a question or comment you wait until I'm done, you don't interrupt me!

Oh Yeah, the mushroom bourgignon,  I couldn't find wide egg noodles, so I bought just regular pasta but the shapes are a largish cup or shell shape, should hold on to the mushroom and sauce nicely.

I  probably shouldn't drink and blog, maybe I should have that made up as a bumper sticker, but where would you put it?  On the car???  Oh, car, on the way to Chedraui I stopped to put some gas in the car, it was nearly empty, and as I'm standing there chatting with the station attendant I notice he's a bit schmutzy in his short sleeve shirt, and I realize I'm actually warm, and I realize I'm in jeans, and a long sleeve shirt.  So I comment to him, in Spanish, How weird it is to come outside, when inside the house is cold and you've dressed for the perceived temperature outside, based on the temperature inside house.  He replied, yes, it's warm outside!

Gads, I have people coming tonight, I need to straighten up, sweep, do the dishes, get out the plates and bowls, crap I don't have 13 bowls,  do I have any disposable bowls, good grief!   I should have made a list before I went to the store, but I needed that wine to finish the bourginon,   That's good wine......I should go buy some more!

ok, so I'm sitting there, working on a document for a project, on my nearly 10 year old laptop, when I start hearing this odd clacking sound.  Now mind you,  I keep the volume off  because I hate all the little pings and chirps, and, and, so I figure it's something else and keep on.  But in the back of my mind is this little worm, it's in there, it's moving, I sense it, way way back there, but I can't quite put my fingers on it, something......

Yeah, you know where this is going.  I didn't listen to the little worm till the clacking got louder, and more persistent - I checked the dvd drive, you know, just in case there was an old disc in there, nope, still more clacking, now I'm scrambling, getting the largest flashdrive I have, hoping to back up, before....

oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, oh please, don't die yet, please,oh please, oh please, let me get just this one last backup

Yeah, you know where this is going.  No, I haven't backed up in, well, in a very long time.  And, well you guessed it, the machine went to the blue screen and advised me it was doing a memory dump,  I shake the flashdrive at the screen and scream dump here, dump here!

I've turned it off and let it rest, then on again, 3 times, to no avail!  I've tried in SafeMode(f8)  no luck.

Weekend on Cozumel, and 'Taste of Playa' del Carmen

Last year we went, for the first time, to the Taste of Playa event held in Playa del Carmen.   I've looked back and can't believe I didn't write about it???!!!!!

Anyway The event has been happening since 2009,  here's their webpage.

So we went last year with a group of friends, some of whom had been the year prior, and at their recommendation we purchased VIP tickets.

We again purchased VIP tickets for this year.   VIP tickets allow you in an hour earlier than the General Public, it affords you a reserved area with tables and chairs (in the General Public area there are only a few scattered high tables at which you can stand, if you can get near them).

Last year we stayed for 3 nights in Playa del Carmen, this year we decided to go first and spend 2 nights on Cozumel, get the ferry to Playa the morning of the event, which opens for VIPs at 2pm, stay that night in Playa then return to Merida Monday afternoon.

We traveled as a group of 8, via ADO bus lines, can't beat bus travel in Mexico.  Oddly, the return trip seemed much longer than the going trip????

First destination was Cozumel.  Tom and I love Cozumel, we've been visiting since the early 80's.  Boy oh boy has that island changed.

We boarded our 6:40AM bus and were in Playa del Carmen in no time.  A quick dash and straight on to the 11am ferry for a 45 minute ride to the island.  The water was rough, and it got pretty darn messy on that ferry, we were sure glad when those doors opened up, let me tell you!

Most of Tom's and my experiences on Cozumel are as divers.  There used to be not much else to do; rent a jeep or moped and drive around the island, spend some time on the windward side, take the dirt track to the ruins of Gervasio, try to get to el faro, OR snorkel, dive, eat, and drink.

Mostly we dove, ate, and drank, but drank sparingly, drinking and diving don't go so well together.  This trip wasn't much different, except for the diving.  We did take our snorkel stuff and go snorkeling, but only once, there was some weather front that was keeping the water up, in fact one day the harbor was closed so that the dive boats couldn't even go out.

We have a few favorite places to eat - for lunch we've always loved Ernesto's.  After an early rise and a few hours on a dive boat, and diving food is all you can think about and Tom and I both remember getting off that boat, gathering up our gear and most days heading straight for Ernesto's for a few cold beers and fajitas.

Well Ernesto's was right there where we last left it,

and the most amazing thing,
after all these years,
and as many times as we've eaten there,

we met Ernesto!

and the beers are just as cold,
and the fajitas are just as good as we remember them.

Another frequented restaurant, for dinner is El Moro, I took no pictures, in fact I'm shocked at how few pictures I took over the whole weekend.

Here's their web page

It's funny, but their clientele is mostly gringo divers.
Guess it's not funny, it's just what it is.

Tom and I have been on friendly terms with Ray, one of the owners for years.  We email, share photos!  In fact he contacted us when his daughter decided she wanted to study here in Merida.  Unfortunately she didn't like being so far from home, so she returned and completed her studies there!   Ray is SO proud!

One cool thing that happened, the taxi driver that took us there gave us a really good suggestion which we tried the next night, La Perlita!

We all agreed that it was very good.  La Perlita doesn't seem to have it's own webpage, but I found this   http://cozumelmexico.net/Restaurant_La_Perlita.html

although I didn't take any photos our friend Manju took this really good one of Tom and me

and like el Moro they have facebook, twitter, and some other little socialnetwork thing that I can't now remember.

Anyway, we ate, we drank, we took long walks, we snorkeled, that was Cozumel.

Sunday AM had us back on the ferry returning to Playa del Carmen.

The Taste of Playa event was fabulous again.
There are some issues, and complaints about the 'VIP' status.  You pay 40USD person, this gets you 20 chits, chits are used to buy your tastes, 1, 2, or 3 chits per item. It also gets you into a reserved seating area, and in to the Tasting event an hour before General Admission.   Unfortunately many of the vendors also seemed to be getting there at 2, and with no controls, the General Public was also coming in at 2.  The lack of  controls also allowed everyone to enter the VIP seating area.  We, being a party of 8, always had someone holding our seats so that was one thing.

The food was fabulous, being vegetarian, actually pescatarian (I still eat seafood) I found LOTS of options, and was stuffed well before my chits ran out.

Based on this I'm not sure we'd buy VIP again!, But we'd definitely go again, although there is a big Music festival here in Merida over the same weekend, so we might have to alternate????

It was a fun weekend.  A bit short, but whatchagonnado!

the view from my hotel balcony on Cozumel, the view the other way was the ocean!

dental work redux

About 2 years ago I reported on a dental experience, a root canal, I subsequently reported on how bad the experience was for me.  I was left with a root canal that wasn't properly done, and a ground down nub of a molar that needed a crown/cap. I don't know the difference between a crown and a cap!

Over the past 2 years I've tried on a few occasions to get the tooth repaired and the process completed - to disastrous results.

Well, I am happy to report that the problem has been resolved.

I was contemplating having the tooth removed, but didn't.  I attempted resolution through two separate references, neither worked out.   Finally, I decided to call a dentist I know, and to whom several friends go and highly recommend.

So last Thursday, just a week ago today, good grief how time flies!  I had the cap/crown put in/on???  A week prior to that I had gone in, had the work done to correct the bad procedure, had the impressions done, and left in a bit of a daze.

I am one of those people that has trouble with going to the dentist - I am WAY better than I used to be.    Anyway, short story, when the dentist got to me, I was in quite a state, pacing, hyperventilating, having chest pains,   blech.   He was just at 30 minutes late, which gave me plenty of time to get myself worked up.   He decide I needed 'something'.  He put 3 drops of something, he told me what but I don't now remember, in water and told me to drink it - I started to sip it!  He said No, like tequila, to which I replied "this is how I drink tequila".  Anyway, the stuff did seem to help, but mostly after the fact.

OK, so last Thursday I got the cap/crown; now my mouth was quite accustomed to that void and this new crown/cap felt quite odd and out of place.   Because we were leaving the next morning and heading over to Cozumel and Playa del Carmen for the weekend Jonna gave me a dental reference in PDC, for just in case!    I didn't need it,  But was really glad to have it!  Gracias Chica!

I'm happy to report that the cap/crown has settled in, my mouth and tongue have adjusted and all is right with the world!   Gracias Javier!

Immigration Renewal 2012, part2

So 7:30am found me sitting on the ledge to the Immigration office,  9am they opened the gates, and we were #13.

Got in to see the Agent fairly quickly -

Point 1 - You CAN NOT renew prior to 30 before the expiration of your current Visa.

Point 2 - We are going for Residente Permanente (Permanent Resident) Status (these are what we were told we would need, your experience could be different)

  • On the on-line form, select these options
    • Que desea hacer? = Cambio de Condicion de Estancia
    • Especifique = Cambio de condicion de residente temporal a residente permanente
    • input your NUE (you find this on your current Visa), and the form fills itself out the rest of the way.
  • What do we need to turn in?
    • The completed online form
    • copy of current visa (take your original)
    • copy of passport pages (take your original)
    • copy of fidecomiso, if you own a house - note: if you are a couple both parties have to have the fide copies (take your original)
    • copy showing payment of fidecomiso, if you own a house (take your original)
    • a most recent utility bill with your correct address, the same address as on your INM form.
    • proof of income, the equivalent of 500 days of minimum salary in DF - 31,165peso, however, since we own our house, and can show our fidecomiso, that amount is cut in half, then with the peso to dollar conversion, today using about 13pesos per dollar, monthly for the past 6 months
    • photos, size infantil, 2 front, 2 side
  • What will be need to pay?
    • per person is 1000pesos for paperwork processing
    • per person, for us - 3815pesos, for a 10-year visa.

ok, that's what I know - today!  could be different tomorrow

Immigration Renewal 2012

9 November brought in to play the new Immigration law. Just, the law, no actual procedures, interpretations, guidelines or training for the INM agents.

Tom stopped in at INM on Thursday to get the list of things required for the renewal process. He was informed that he'd have to return Friday because the law  changed that day and the list of needs isn't available until after the new laws go in to place.

Friday morning I went online and filled out the online forms for both Tom and me to renew our immigration documents, we gathered together everything we felt we needed based on ALL the discussion that we've read and heard.  Our thought process was to show all this 'stuff' and see what panned out.

We arrived at INM about 10:45.  No lists of requirements are available.  The process now, at least here in Merida, and as of last Friday at about 11am is that you show up early, queue up, get your number to get inside, and wait.  When you get inside you meet with an agent who will explain the new process, advise you, and then they will tell you what you need.

So, we've reviewed everything we can find, and we've gathered everything that we think we'll need regardless of which designation they/we determine we'll need and we'll take all that with us tomorrow morning when we get in line outside INM's gates at about 7:30am.

More later!
